Columbus Day weekend soared high on LBI as we celebrated the 6th Annual LBI Fly Kite Festival. Hosted by the LBI Chamber of Commerce, and organized in 2015 to highlight the sport of kiting on our beautiful beaches. Hands down, this is one of the most popular and colorful family-friendly annual events in Long Beach Island. This event has incredible views with miles of Giant 3D inflatables taking over the skies.

Professional kite riders from across the U.S. joined us this weekend to show off their kiting skills. With COVID-19 on the rise visiting pro kiters were from states that are currently not on N.J.’s Travel Advisory List. Most importantly, Volunteers and local kiters abided by all N.J. social distancing rules. This made the festival a safe success for all. We applaud our local area sponsors, volunteers, and local officials who help make this event a success year after year.

Legend says that the kite was first invented in China over 2,000 years ago. A Chinese farmer tied a string to his hat to keep it from blowing away. Secondly, the earliest written account we have of the kite was in 200 B.C. Chinese General Han Hsin flew a kite over the walls of a city he was ambushing to measure the distance his army would have to travel to hit their target. In conclusion, the kite has come a long way from then. Flying a kite for a professional or amateur nowadays brings out sheer excitement and satisfaction from being able to control the incredible power of your kite. Therefore, giving you a peaceful sense of accomplishment. What a feeling seeing your kite glide in nature is breathtaking, and many have become addicted to the sport and lifestyle.

We are so proud to be part of this LBI community and all that it has to offer to its locals and visitors.
